Serving Together In Recovery
One of the Al-Anon tools of recovery is service. At the group level, it could mean setting up, welcoming newcomers, being a sponsor, or handling literature for the group. At the district level, you can be a group representative, be a service coordinator, or part of a committee (website, public outreach, office volunteers, hospitals/institutions, Alateen). If you are interested in doing service at the district level click, please Contact Us. Service is what keeps the Al-Anon program going! Here are some current opportunities:
District Office Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed in the district office at 870 Market Street, Suite 318 any time and any day. If you are an active member of Al-Anon with a home group you may volunteer an hour or two to be the first person a newcomer speaks with when reaching out for help. To learn more, contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@al-anonsf.org or call the District 12 office at (415) 834-9940.
Alateen Outreach
Do you know a teenager who has been affected by the family disease of alcoholism?
We have public outreach opportunities for Al-Anon members who would like to do service for Alateen. The only requirement to serve is a willingness to carry the message to teenagers who have been affected by someone else's drinking. This is a great way to do service!
On the first Monday of each month, there is an Alateen Outreach Planning Meeting from 7:45pm to 8:45pm near Church/Market. Please join us if you'd like to help out! Send an e-mail to alateen@al-anonsf.org for more details.
Alateen Sponsorship
Prospective Alateen sponsors need to have at least two consecutive years of regular Al-Anon membership and must pass a state-sponsored background check.
For more information on these requirements, go to the NCWSA's Guidelines Appendix B web page and click document B17, "NCWSA Guidelines for Teen Safety".
Send an e-mail to alateen@al-anonsf.org for more details.

D12 Al-Anon/Alateen Speaker Meeting
(meets monthly)
The second Sunday of each month is our monthly district-sponsored speaker meeting. (See details here.) A speaker shares for a full 45 minutes, and there's for extended fellowship, food, and drink after the meeting.
There are many opportunities for service at the Speaker Meeting. Please contact us by email regarding any of these:
Hosting - an opportunity for your group.
Your Al-Anon / Alateen group can host the meeting by providing a secretary for the meeting and by bringing pot-luck food and drink for after-meeting fellowship. Our facilitators will advise your group on logistics.
Speaking - individual service
If you're interested in being a speaker, or want to nominate someone you think might be, please contact us.
Facilitating - individual service for a 1-year term.
Ongoing service opportunities are also available (separate from hosting) for Literature Person, Sound Technician, and Flyer Maker.
District 12 Business Meetings
(meets monthly)
Ever wonder what happens at the district business meetings? Everyone who comes has a voice; however, only Group Representatives can vote. You can also read the Bylaws for our district.
The business meetings are at the Flood Building on 870 Market St (between Powell and Stockton). Make sure to sign in at the security desk and there will be a sign for the specific meeting location (the room number often changes from on month to the next.)
